Recommend me some...
« on: June 16, 2011, 04:10:48 AM »
Standard thread.

I'm looking to round out my amazon shopping cart right now. I'm a sucker for free shipping so I'm actually buying some good albums.

Recommend me a good starting point for:
Agalloch
Emperor

They are the two at the top of my likelihood list right now. I need some new metal and they are two I've put off buying for ages. I'm possibly thinking of Ulver also but I really haven't checked them out much yet. Right now, I was thinking I was probably going to pick up In the Nightside Eclipse by Emperor, but I figured everyone's two cents might be well spent. Seems to have served pretty well earlier.

Otherwise, even good random suggestions for newer metal bands. I'm way behind the loop right now.

I have also been meaning to check them out. I'll have to youtube some before I order.

Also, anyone have a good second NOFX album to go for? I always forget how much I like this band and get sad when I realize I only have Punk In Drublic. I mainly like there stuff that is a bit more guitar focused, but can't really go wrong anywhere. Any other album that sticks out for anyone would be pretty helpful.

No need to youtube the band.  I didn't and it's one of the best albums ever.

Recommend me a good starting point for:
Agalloch
Emperor
Agalloch "The Mantle" or "Ashes Against the Grain"

Emperor I suppose you could go "In the Nightside Eclipse" but I don't think that's a very good representation of the rest of Emperor's material.  I would personally go with "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk"

And if you decide to check out Ulver get "Bergtatt" if you can find it.  That's if you're interested in their metal output.  If you're looking for strangeness I would go Blood Inside or Shadows of the Sun

White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean

I will add "So Long and Thanks For All The Shoes" to that list.

Rounded out my shopping cart with
Protest The Hero - Scurrilous
Jerry Cantrell - Boggy Depot
King's X - Dogman
Alice In Chains - Alice In Chains, Face Lift (amazed it's taken me this long to buy these)
Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Agalloch - The Mantle
NOFX - White Trash Two Heebs and a Bean, So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes
Mad Season - Above

That should give me plenty of new music to listen to this summer at work.

Might have them soon here. I just got my MP3 player in today and am converting back to itunes. Turns out with 10k+ songs that it becomes a bit time consuming. That and I passed out for 3-4 hours in the middle of the process.

I ordered everything through people posting on amazon so some are taking a while to get here. As of now, I've only received the NOFX and Alice In Chains albums.

Checked out "The Mantle" at work and on my trip to my bank the other day. It was pretty awesome. Perfect for a cold overcast day, operating slow machinery, while in a cemetery.  :D Some of it was really cool in that it reminded me of local folk bands but with the metal edge to it. Forgot how much I liked these guys. I'll have to get some more of their stuff.

The Emperor album was the last to arrive out of all of them. The funny thing is, I think I purchased a copy that someone stole from a public library. I'll probably check that out either Monday or Tuesday at work.

I'll have to give it another listen. Planning on doing so this week. Spent most of that album working on the loud machinery and working with coworkers so it was interrupted a lot. Sounding good from the initial run through though.

First run through Emperor, good stuff. Been overdue for buying one of their albums and this didn't disappoint. Not the greatest listen through since I'm at work and it's like listening with background noise through everything, but still good.

As for King's-X, I enjoyed it on a quick couple runs. Like with others, the lawn mowers background noise was a bit of a pain, but I liked it. Seems like an album that will grow on me more with time too.
